CEC Standard 6
Beginning special education professionals use foundational knowledge of the field and the professional Ethical Principles and Practice Standards to inform special education practice, to engage in lifelong learning, and to advance the profession.
Reflection of my knowledge related to the standard:
As a special educator I feel it is my responsible to consistently act in a professional manner both in the school and community. I believe it is necessary to all to strive to be a positive role model for the students and I can do this through my behavior and actions. Educators need to be life-long learners. I also feel that it is important to stay current on the field’s evolving evidence-based strategies, research, technologies, laws, and organizations. I will do this by attending conferences, seminars, faculty meetings, and district meetings. Throughout my intense field experience I attended meetings with the special education team, IEP meetings, student intervention services, and faculty meetings. During these meetings I was always professional and respectful of the student and their family. I know it is important to respect the students' diverse culture, beliefs, and needs. Educating myself on the current issues is necessary so that I can be an effective teacher and advocate for my students. I believe that teachers should consistently reflect on their teaching and practices. This will allow me to grow and improve myself as an educator.
One important aspect I have learned from my course work is to never stop learning. The field of special education is always evolving and staying current allow us to be more in-tune with the needs of our students. Therefore, it is important for us as teachers to join professional organizations, read education journals, and keep attending professional development opportunities. Joining a professional organization can provide access to important legal information and changes as well as access to current research journals. Research journals allow us to see what has worked for other professionals and see exactly what steps they took. I had the chance to join a professional development conference as a part of my learning. It was a great chance for me to see what methods other teachers are using in their classes, talk about what technology they have incorporated, and to brainstorm and bounce ideas off of one another.
Artifact(s) that Demonstrates my Knowledge Related to the Standard:

The presentation examines the case of the Board of Education of Hendrick Hudson Central School District v. Rowley (1982) as bases to determine what the word appropriate means to guarantee families receive a free and appropriate education.
