CEC Standard 3
Beginning special education professionals use knowledge of general and specialized curricula to individualize learning for individuals with exceptionalities.
Reflection of my knowledge related to the standard:
I have learned that before any instruction can begin, instructional planning must be done first. It is important to review the students’ IEP goals and needs then plan instruction so that students can successfully meet their goals. One way to do this is to collaborate with other teachers and the students’ parents. Both parents and the students’ other or previous teachers can provide useful information about the students’ habits, strengths, weaknesses and interests.
Students in the special education classroom should be exposed to the same grade-level material that their peers are learning. Throughout my courses I have learned how to adapt the general education curriculum to fit the needs of my students. This includes reviewing the scope and sequence of the curriculum and arranging the skills and concepts so they build upon one another in a logical and sequential order. When planning instruction, I know that reviewing the state standards is important so that all of the grade-level standards can be taught.
In my undergraduate and graduate studies I collected the necessary information about the curriculum and my students’ needs to create short and long range plans for both general education and special education classrooms. These For each lesson or unit, short range objectives should be created. These short range objectives will help me make instructional decisions and determine if my students are making adequate progress toward their final IEP goals. I understand that an imperative instructional strategy to use is frequent assessments. Having an assessment plan and monitoring their progress shows if instruction is effective and if students are showing progress or if re-teaching the skill is necessary. When planning instruction I will take all of these factors into consideration so that I can provide effective instruction and my students can met their goals.
The long-range plan for my classroom should contain imperative information for each one of my students, including each of their individual goals. Long rang plans contain the necessary information needed to provide individualized instruction to meet the needs of my students. After the long range plans are completed, instruction can begin. The plan should include support services, class schedules, and an overall teaching timeline for each of the standards. By planning ahead, I will be able to build lessons on one another, combine or separate lessons as needed, and to determine if my students are learning faster or slower than I was expecting.
Throughout my experiences I have learned how to develop short and long range plans that follows both general and special education curricula. I understand how to adapt general education curricula to accommodate the needs of students with learning disabilities. I am able to arrange selected concepts in a systematic and sequential order. I understand how to translate the state standards and general education curricula into short and long range goals while taking into account the individual's needs and abilities. Throughout my courses I have learned how to create a meaningful, individualized curriculum working to achieve individual IEP goals and objectives. I understand the difference between direct and indirect services and how I must abide my each student's IEP when providing them with the services they need. I know how to create long range goals as well as individualized goals for students based on their individual strengths and needs.

The artifact that I have attached is a differentiated lesson plan that I created that can be used for students with and without learning disabilities. This curriculum is based on the first grade Indiana math standards. When creating the curriculum I was mindful of the characteristics of students with learning disabilities and addressed them through the addition of accommodations. These accommodations allow me to reach the needs of all students and can be used in the general education classroom as well as a special education classroom for students with learning disabilities.

When you have a student(s) who has disabilities in your classroom, you should refer to the Individualized Education Program (IEP) on a regular basis when doing your lesson planning. The IEP is the cornerstone of the special education process for each individual student as it describes the students’ unique needs and how the school will strategically address those needs. The following is an example of an IEP.

The artifact I have attached below is an assignment that I created in ED 584-Methods and Materials: Mild Intervention class. I was asked to select a commercially produced product such as a game, software or teaching aid in any subject area and show how it can be adapted for use by students with special needs. In my write up, I focused on how UNO can be used to benefit students with autism in math and social development.
