CEC Standard 1
Beginning special education professionals understand how exceptionalities may interact with development and learning and use this knowledge to provide meaningful and challenging learning experiences for individuals with exceptionalities.
Reflection of my knowledge related to the standard:
When teaching students with disabilities, it is important to remember two things; that each student is different and what their disability entails. By understanding the disability and how it affects the student, we can create a program to match their needs. We also must realize that just because two students are labeled with the same disability it does not mean that their needs are the same.
During my intense field experience, I had the opportunity to work with students that have a variety of disabilities. It is through this experience that I have learned that students with learning disabilities have a variety of characteristics. I have seen how these characteristics can impact student learning, socially, academically, and behaviorally. Understanding these characteristics and knowing strategies to address them is necessary for students to be successful.
In addition, my varied experiences over the last 14 years has allowed me to work closely with students in the general education who are typically developing children and those with special needs. Having the opportunity to work with students with and without disabilities allows me to better understand the similarities and differences among students. I have learned that all students deserve to be treated as unique human beings.
Consequently, it is important to implement plans to effectively teach all students including those with learning disabilities. I have learned there are many evidence-based teaching strategies that are beneficial to all students. These include strategies such as modeling, direct instruction, and using questions to check for understanding. Using these strategies in all classrooms has been proven to be effective for students with and without disabilities.

This paper documents interviews that I had with parents of students with special needs. The goal of this experience was to understand and learn from these parents in an effort to improve my ability to meet the goals and needs of my future students and their families. After talking with these parents, I feel I have a better understanding of how the parent of a child with special needs sees things. One of the things both of the parents mentioned is that they never treated their child or see their child as being less than or any different than other children. The other thing they both mention is that no matter what age or grade level of their child they want the best for their children and expect teachers to help provide the resources and tools to help meet their unique needs. Finally, they want their child to know and understand that they can achieve great things in spite of their challenges. As a special needs teacher, my number one priority will be to help every one of the students that I come in contact with excel beyond their limitations.
